strange night

today started out normal enough. Got a reluctant donovan out of bed and off to school and myself to work. on my way home I see a car on the craig/95 off-ramp engulfed in flames as the firetruck is arriving.

so then around 7:30pm as I'm getting ready for LOST, we get a call from vanessa's mom who had just been attacked by a couple of pit bulls while she was walking her dogs. So instead of a night of relaxing TV, we transported one of her heavily wounded dogs to the animal ER. her other dog "Little bit" a dachshund, was killed. Some good samaritans helped get the pit bulls away by shoving a broomhandle down the lead dogs throat. In the scuffle 3 people got bit by the dogs.

Now we're here in the people ER where V's mom is being checked out. gonna have to download lost. anyone want to watch it this weekend?

We missed you guys last night. Hope Vanessa's mom and the mom's other dog is alright...was there anything that provoked the attack or were the pit bulls just wild? Where were the pit bulls' owners?

It was pit bulls gone wild. My mom was about 70 feet away from them and what the owners claim that happened is that the female owner of the couple just got back from taking them somewhere and that they got away from her when she went to take them from her car into the house. I don't know if I believe that. Everyone that was there and saw what happened made no mention of provocation. My mom was just around the corner from the safety of her home. It was awful. She can hardly stop crying for fitful sleep and she has no idea how to break it to my sister...she absolutely adored Little Bit. My mom is throwing up occasionally, as well. She's pretty traumatized. She said at one point they were on both sides of her gnashing, clawing, at biting their way at another taste of the dog they had killed. Yeah, it was more than awful, it was a horror scene on the streets of Summerlin with about 19 witnesses and several wonderful people who stepped in to help out. They may have saved my mom's life, too. Through the darkness there is a silver lining...

Vanessa - heartbroken and sad for the loss of a wonderful little pet that brought great joy to my mom, my sister, and many others.

If it makes you feel any better, we're super brutal on pitbull owners in my court.

Anyway, sorry this happened to your family. I'm glad your mom is okay.

My mom's summerlin association has already put out an advisory for residents to make known any issues of any kind with animals and they used her incident as an example. Looks like the other dog, Sierra, will not make it either. She's close to kidney failure, according to her Vet.

Will the pit bulls be put down? How are the owners reacting now? Were they jerks?

The owners, thankfully, are taking full responsibility, so far. There will be lawsuits, I think, more than a few people were bit in the incident. They have already paid out $500 for some care provided for the surviving dog (so far) and they've placed a deposit for her current care. I paid $57 for my mom's medications and she'll have her co-pays for the doc visit (e.r.) We'll see how stellar they really are. I think this would break almost anyone financially.

i would destroy those people. I have absolutly no respect for bad owners. It is the owners responsiblity alone to take care of their pets. Dogs can't take care of them selves and need the guidence of their owners. Also dogs don't "just" attack so they must have faught them maybe in the past. I have NO respect, and think that your mom should take them for all they are worth. Can I pull the trigger on the dogs?

Sorry, I meant the owners, can I pull the trigger on the owners?

I disagree. I think some dogs DO just attack! Pit Bulls are notorious for that! My mom was walking over some sand dunes a couple years back with her little dog when a pit bull ran up out of the blue and almost killed her dog! I've been camping at a place once where dogs were allowed, but absolutely NO pit bulls.

There are too many stories of these dogs attacking their owners, GRANDparents, kids, etc. etc. I'm not a fan of pitbulls at all!
